History

In the traditional European universities, Mathematics was taught in the College of Liberal Arts. Mathematics at The University of Tuebingen also began as a part of the "Artistenfakultaet". In 1507 Johannes Stoeffler, a leading astronomer, was appointed as the first professor of "Mathesis". At that time, Mathematics and Astronomy were closely related in Tuebingen. Wilhelm Schickard (1592 - 1635), who constructed the first known computing machine in 1623, was professor of Hebrew and Astronomy in Tuebingen.

In 1863 Tuebingen½s Faculty of Natural Sciences was founded, the first in Germany. In 1869 the Seminar for Mathematics and Physics was established, and combined teaching and research. The Seminar was the predecessor of today's Faculty of Mathematics, which was founded in 1969. Tuebingen was also one of the first German universities to establish a computing center and a professorship for the mathematics of high-efficiency computing.
Today's Faculty of Mathematics conducts research in both pure and applied mathematics. Specific areas of research are organised into ten Research Groups. These ten Research Groups cooperate closely within the Faculty.

Teaching Staff and Students

The tenured teaching faculty presently includes twenty-five mathematicians. About forty postdoctoral fellows and research fellows are also active. About seven hundred students are currently studying Mathematics as a major academic subject.

Courses of Study and Degrees

Two degrees are offered below the doctoral level: the Diplom and Teacher Certification.
The Diplom degree is the prefered degree for a career in industry. Teacher Certification is required for students desiring to teach in high schools.
A second major subject is required for both degrees. A subject related to mathematics is usually selected, such as Physics or Computer Science. Economics or Biology may also be chosen.
Successful completion of either the Diplom or the Teacher Certification is the normal prerequesite for doctoral studies. Doctoral studies lead to the degree Dr. rer. nat.

Library Facilities

The faculty library currently contains 27,000 volumes. An additional 14,500 volumes of scientific periodicals and 300 journal subscriptions provide excellent facilities for study and research.
The faculty library is located near the university library. The faculty library cooperates closely with the Sciences Department of the university library. The Sciences Department of the university library has an excellent collection of mathematical literature.

Computer Facilities

A large number of workstations are available. Some research groups have fast workstations available for research projects and for the training of advanced students.
All computer facilities are connected through the university network to local servers, national computer resources and to Internet.

Research Activities

The ten research groups in the Department of Mathematics cooperate closely with each other and with related faculties in the University. The Department of Mathematics works closely with the faculties of Physics, Biology, Computer Science, Linguistics and Philosophy.
Tuebingen is centrally located in Europe. This facilitates cooperation with mathematicians from Europe and from around the world. Members of the Department organise and participate in conferences and seminars at the Mathematics Research Institute in nearby Oberwolfach and at the University Research Institute at Blaubeuren.
The Department has close contacts to many national and international research groups and institutions. Members of the Department are actively involved on the editorial boards of international journals and in a number of scientific academies.

International research projects and cooperation exist for researchers and students. The Department participates in academic exchange programs through the Humboldt Foundation, the ARC Program, the European Human Capital and Mobility Program, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
